HBCUs outperform non-HBCU institutions in retaining and graduating first-generation, low-income African American students.
Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have long been pillars of education, opportunity and progress. However, beyond their historical significance, HBCUs remain relevant today, not just as academic institutions but also as powerful economic engines that drive career success and community development. HBCUs continue to provide students with the support and resources needed to build financially secure futures and excel in careers that impact society.
HBCUs Drive Economic Empowerment
HBCUs serve only about 3% of college students in the U.S., yet they produce nearly 16% of all Black U.S. graduates from these institutions and are responsible for 18% of graduates in STEM fields.
According to a landmark report by UNCF, HBCUs generate:
$16.5 billion annually in total economic impact
More than 136,000 jobs nationwide each year
2021 HBCU graduates will earn $146 billion in their lifetimes
